| How can two short weeks possibly turn everything upside down? God can be a joker sometimes. He will show up on the scene, shake things up, and show us, thankfully, that He has his own far superior plan for us... | | |
| May he provide me with the strength and the wisdom to make the tough choices, when they come, which they will...soon. | | |
| If Just for a Moment...
Admittedly, I haven't written a new entry in a while, and quite
frankly, I have the distinct feeling that at some point in the future
I'm going to regret having written this one. In any case, I just came
back from seeing the movie Memoirs of a Geisha,
and I just had to write. The movie was excellent, certainly, but it's what
it sparked inside of me that really compelled me to write. It's the
same thing that one of my favorite books, Jane Eyre, sparked in me
almost about 5 years ago.
Nothing tears me apart, yet captivates my attention, as much as stories
of pure, unrequited love. This is especially powerful when it is not
drowned about by the busy, non-stop movement of modern life. In Memoirs
of a Geisha, we are shown the culture and atmosphere of Japan when
tradition was still highly honored, and when culture and people's lives
took precedence. We see the main character's love stretched and taken
to the edge, and the entire time, although I sit in the theater
motionless, in the inside I feel ever so strongly what she feels, even despite my
having not directly experienced something of the kind.
I so yearn for that life, for a life shared with someone so
completely, without being drowned out by the honking cars and the
scrolling stockmarket marquee and the monthly profit reports. I desire
the life blessed by, not fettered by, tradition, where I and somebody else share
the simplicities of life, and enjoy all that God has provided us. To
be honest, I cannot even fully explain what it is that burns within me, for I am neither a painter of portraits nor of words.
When I think about it, I honestly don't imagine that it's even
possible, that life-- that life shared so deeply with somebody else.
It's what happens when reality comes crashing in on the image of,
*corny yes I know*, a hopeless romantic. Therefore, I go day by day,
focusing all of my attention on an alternative future, not the one that
is tucked away deep within my heart, yet still one I look forward to. I
spend my days preparing myself academically for that future, and I
spend my alone time shaping my psychology to focus on that future, but
in rare instances, whether it's me flipping through pages of Jane Eyre,
or watching Snow Falling on Cedars or Memoirs of a Geisha, that dream
tucked away pierces through the shroud, if just for a moment...

| If you are idealistic or easily offended, I'm warning you now. Your naive little self may not be able to take this...
Murphy's Love Laws
* All the good ones are taken.
* If the person isn't taken, there's a reason.
* The nicer someone is, the farther away she is from you.
* (Brains) x (Beauty) x (Availability) = Constant
* The amount of love you feel for someone is inversely proportional to how much they love you.
* Money can't buy love, but it sure gets you a great bargaining position.
* The best things in the world are free-- and worth every penny of it.
* Every kind action has a not-so-kind reaction.
* Nice guys finish last.
* If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
* Availability is a function of time. The minute you get interested is the minute they find someone else. | | |
